What is a RACI Matrix?

R

Responsible

The person who does the work. Every task must have at least one Responsible person. There can be multiple.

A

Accountable

The person who is ultimately answerable for the task. There should be exactly one Accountable per task — no more.

C

Consulted

People who provide input before the task is done. Two-way communication — they are asked for feedback.

I

Informed

People kept informed of progress. One-way communication — they receive updates but are not asked for input.

RACI matrix best practices

  • → Every task must have exactly one Accountable (A) person
  • → Keep the Consulted list short — too many inputs slows decisions
  • → If one person has R on most tasks, they may be overloaded
  • → Review your RACI at the start of every project phase
  • → A blank cell means that person has no role in that task — that is OK
